Yeah so, I guess my favorite way to express myself in the past year has been with my hair. Red, brown, blonde, pink, purple, and now blue. I think I like to because it's not permanent like more tattoos, it's not fleeting like a single outfit, but somewhere in the middle. I get to wear it everyday for while, say something about myself, and eventually change it again to say something new. I know that sounds silly when you think of rebellious teenagers changing their hair color to stand out or piss off their parents. At my age, it's something wholly different and harder to explain.

That ended up sounding way deeper than I intended...

It's ridiculously nice outside today, like April-nice not February. I mean, open-toed shoes and thin silky harem-ish pants? If this is global warming, pollute away! (sarcasm, by the way, please don't destroy the planet). Also this shirt which you can't see in the photos is the most delicious dark blueish green with gathered mesh and lace sleeves. I might need one in every color.

Last night was the winter solstice, and now the days will start getting longer again. Thank Gaia, because I wake up in the dark and I get home in the dark and it's starting to get depressing. Yeah, so, I tried on both belts this morning and neither made me happy, so I wore both. Problem solved. One is thrifted and made of the oldest, sturdiest leather ever. The other is from an estate sale with a rustic-looking buckle. The frizzy hair is courtesy the drizzling rain today.

I was in the mood for something comfy today, which to me means: flat riding boots, stretchy riding pants, and a big ol' sweater. This sweater is vintage Christian Dior and cost me $1 at an estate sale. It smelled like moth balls and attics and took a month to air out...but totes worth it!

I don't know how it can possibly be the middle of December already. The past few months have been so busy they flew by. I was hoping to catch some holiday spirit in NYC on Saturday. The store windows were pretty enough, it was SantaCon so the streets were filled with thousands of drunk santas, and I saw the tree in Rock. Plaza but I have to admit, it still doesn't really feel like Christmas. One of the highlights was that I did see Christian Siriano on the street with presumably two assistants and lots of shopping bags...fierce.

I don't really know why I love it. I like the retro color, the teeny print, the shoulder pleats, the fact that the shoulder pads were so big that even I could not leave them in, the fact that it's vintage Pierre Cardin and it only cost me $3. But really, this is an ugly blouse.

This is my favorite hat and I have a few... a cloche, a few fedoras, a pageboy, a bunch of scrunchy crochet ones but this one gets all the comments. Usually of middle-aged or older generations, both men and women will comment on it. They don't see fedoras as a Justin Timberlake-esque fashion statement as a lot of our generation does. I think they appreciate it as a functional classic piece. Also it totally makes my day when I get complimented by a 70-something on my taste :)

Anastasia brows!!!

A couple weeks ago I mentioned I was lucky enough to try and review Anastasia Beverly Hills Beauty Express for Brows and Eyes. It's a fabulous palette esp for us blondies with pale, hard to see brows. It comes with stencils to fill in, wax to set, perfect shades of brow powder and a shadow and highlighter for a finished natural look. Above you can see the before and after. It's easy to use and will replace my Urban Decay brow box. I found that the wax was smoother and less sticky than UD (which I prefer) and although it doesn't have tweezers like the UD it makes up for that with a larger brush and highlighter. If you have any hesitation in shaping your brows, these stencils will be a godsend. It comes with 5 different shapes and sizes so you can pick the most natural shape for you. It lasts all day and is a great value for all you get. Pick one up at Sephora!

I am so bummed summer is over here in DC. Leaves are falling. The air is crisp. It makes me nostalgic for college and I start to miss walking home from class with my best friend, coffee in one hand and a portfolio in the other. Then I remember the brutal critiques and accidentally cutting myself with x-acto blades and the feeling passes :)

I was too lazy to scope out some of our better photo spots, so this made for a pretty-enough backdrop. The idea of the perfect American home with the white picket fence doesn't resonate with me at all. I think I would rather have an old row home with a wrought iron gate and winding ivy. Maybe a condo with a glass balcony and a view. I suppose I have plenty of time to decide.

I am completely obsessed with Madmen and especially the costume and set design. What I wouldn't give to look like Joan or Betty... Here is my updated version: vintage shaped dress with collar and big fat belt to pull it in, classic cardigan and wedge heels, and big round shades... all with a high dose of neon.

B2B- Back to Blond. Yes I did it, I had changed my hair color so much the past year (as you all have seen) from red, to strawberry, to deep chestnut, I had kinda forgotten what my real hair looked like. So back to blond I went. I had fun changing it but now I feel like I look like myself again. One problem with being blond-my eyebrows are pretty much invisible. I had them dyed when my hair was dark but now that's not necessary, just need something to fill them in. Here comes the serendipity: I got an offer to try out and review Anastasia of Beverly Hills Beauty Express brow kit. It looks so fool proof, I can't wait to show you. Did I mention Anastasia is the chick who does Oprah's brows!

If you have been reading my last couple posts I have been crocheting a lot lately and mentioned that besides making the usual hats and scarves I am also making jewelry. Now you can see a sample! I am crocheting bib necklaces and headbands and doily type things and using polymer clay to make roses as accents. Next goal: create enough to start my own etsy store. Next problem: what the hell do I name it?

Olive drab was a term for military uniforms back in the day. I figured it was quite appropriate considering this whole outfit is military-ish, from the military style coat, olive tones, and lace up cap-toed boots. Yes, usually too much of any trend is bad but I like to think I was into military garb way before it was a trend... so there. Seems like all my outfits have been beigy grays, olive, and black lately so I am sparing you the variety of similar looks. Also, I am lazy, at least with blogging. I have on the other hand been very busy crocheting. My last trip to the craft store got a question from the super sweet check-out chick about what in the world kind of project I'm working on because of the huge variety and sheer amount of yarn I was buying. The answer is this: hats, scarves, dog sweaters, and jewelry. It' surprisingly consuming. I guess I haven't felt like painting lately and crocheting and knitting is so easily transportable. I can take it to work and chat with my girls at lunch while my hands busily loop and hook away. If you've never tried it, I highly recommend it even though you will get grandma jokes from your friends.

how to stay warm

The easiest way to stay warm? Pile on neutrals! Grays and beiges and olive and tan make up this outfit. I would like to point out my new bag! It's a lovely retro style messenger bag made out of recycled leather (which leaves my vegetarian-animal loving self guilt free). Since I stopped buying new leather items I have been searching for recycled and fake leather bags but seriously... there is nothing like a smooshy soft leather. This bag was custom made for me by the lovely Christine of Rookie Rags. Find her here on etsy. It is so lovely and carefully made! I have no idea how she can work so well with leather. It looks professionally made and has gotten me a bunch of compliments already. I have no doubt I will be buying from her again.

brunette bangs

I got bored again and dyed my hair dark chocolate brown and cut some blunt bangs. I'm really happy with it and even went to get my blonde eyebrows and eyelashes tinted for the first time. The eyebrows turned out awesome. I've never been able to see them before just the powder shadow I fill them in with. I was hoping having tinted eyelashes would mean no more mascara...not really the case. Without makeup you can see all the way to the tips of my lashes now but they aren't black enough for me personally not to wear mascara. Either way I still feel like it was a worthwhile investment.

What to do with an old frame

I have a tendency to save things. Call me a hoarder if you want, but as an artist, I feel like there will be a use for everything. Today I realized that I had enough postcards to hang them together... so the use for this frame finally became apparent. I took eyelet screws from a regular picture framing kit and hung string between them in three rows. Then paperclipped the postcards to the string, simple right?! I already have plans to buy some regular closepins to hang watercolors in the same manner to even larger frames I've been keeping on my balcony for two years while I thought of a reason to use them. Hoarder maybe, but I'm glad now I kept them!

I recently bought a couple sally henson nail art pens, then went back and bought a couple more. They are so much fun! These horrible pics are of an Indian inspired design and a nail corset design I did recently. Maybe because of the daily nail, but I am recently much more interested in playing with nail polishes. Did you hear that American Apparel just added 12 new colors! I want them all! Especially Hunter and Manilla. They are 3 free like Butter London but half the price. Too bad you can't mix and match the 7-packs. Every one of them have at least one color I don't want.

My friends know I have always been fascinated with graffiti, not just tagging, but huge murals and train art really speak to me. This comes partly from loving colorful art and design, my previous years in Richmond (full of trains and all my friends were spray painting them), and my boyfriend's love of all street and urban culture. I don't usually do this but I thought I would share my new favorite artist's work with you. I know already that his use of bright, beautiful colors and organic patterns will influence my design work. I love stencil work like that of Banksy and plenty other street artists, but this guys addition of color is unreal. It speaks to street culture as well as reflects his home of Bogata, Columbia. These leggings make me so happy. The print is called grandma's couch! I can't wait to wear them in fall with some lace-up boots. By the way, I recently saw Food, Inc. by Micheal Pollan and King Corn-two awesome documentaries. I highly recommend both. Being a consumer in a world of processed food is rather disheartening but understanding the truth about where your food comes from is more important today than ever before.

It is the warmest June on record here, after record breaking snowstorms last winter, I'm fine with the heat. I love the layering of winter, but nothing beats a summer dress and fun sandals. I've also made a new commitment regarding my shopping that I'm ready to announce and make myself accountable for. As a long-time vegetarian and animal lover, I have come to grips with my hypocrisy over fashion. I had become a hard-core Balenciaga collector and I love my bags dearly. I'll keep using the ones I have and probably keep them to pass on to my future daughter :) But as of about a month ago, I am no longer purchasing 1st use leather. There are so many ways to get upcycled leather (recycled leather that would be trashed) or vegan products now. Stella McCartney and Matt & Nat make this easier than you would think. Eco-fashion is here to stay and I'm now on the band-wagon. The bag I have in this post is an adorable Matt & Nat santogold shoulder bag in the most lovely pale pink. Any suggestions for other vegan fashion is appreciated :)

I decided to maintain my darker red hair, it eliminates the need for a tan, as it provides a nice contrast to my pale skin. Only downfall is that I need to fill in my eyebrows everyday now. I'm wearing my new Stella McCartney cork sandals from Intermix. Buy them here.
I love the neutral tones and pop of hot pink lining the cork. They are pretty comfortable too considering they are like 6 inches. The foot bed is like a birkenstock. Also Michelle Williams was caught wearing them in Cannes this week :)

Sorry for the lack of posts lately; I have been focusing more on my home decor so I thought I would share some photos. I recently bought a new dining table and decided that I wanted a group of mismatched eclectic chairs to go with it. I got my first chair from freecycle, one with a beautiful sturdy frame but needed a lot of work--perfect! I painted it black and reupholstered it with a piece of a sheet from Urban Outfitters. I love the damask print of the sheet and have plenty left to make a runner, more seat cushions, and a couple throw pillows :) I only wish I had taken a before pic to show you how easy it is to take a chair with paint splattering, a torn seat, and obvious time in a garage and make it pretty again. I also decided to take the plunge and put black paint on my walls *gasp*, but it was totally worth it as it pefectly frames my black fireplace now. I was also in the mood to paint. It's been a while since I've felt inspired enough. These are obviously informed by one of my favorite female artists: georia o'keefe. Email me if you are interested in buying one or the whole group. The obsession with patio dresses continues! Also my efforts to be more environmentally friendly-my newest matt & nat bag. Its the red santogold shoulder bag that uses 21 recycled bottles. My first was a magenta japanese paper hobo from when matt & nat was first sold at cusp and other larger stores. The design and quality has definitely gone up since then.

5 little ducklings

Today some abandoned ducklings stopped traffic to get across a two lane road outside my office as I got back from my afternoon starbucks run. I would not have made it through the afternoon without my sumatra and soy refill. Once the ducklings got to my side of the street they wanted to continue on, obviously scared and confused they wanted to go towards a busy intersection further away from the river and where ever they came from. We kept them still and put them in a box while a passerby checked for a nest or a mother duck and called animal control. In the end we took them to the shelter where a wildlife rescue group could take care of them. It broke my heart that they were all alone and we couldn't find their mom, but we definitely didn't want to risk them crossing such a dangerous road! On the way to the shelter, there was clearly a little ringleader in the group, making the most noise and trying to "fly" out of the box. I have no doubt this one was the little genius that led his brothers and sisters away from home. They were the cutest little things!

It's been a while since my last post and somehow during that time it changed from spring to summer-like weather. No joke, it was 88 degrees today in Washington. I love the heat so this is a welcome change especially after all the snow we had this year. You may or may not notice, I changed my hair color. It's actually a darker copper than what the photos show.
Somehow this simple superficial change was exactly what I needed.

Omg it's officially spring! I can't believe that it's now so wonderful outside. The snow is finally melted and it's 70 plus degrees out. We spent the day getting lunch at NM cafe and picking up organic family owned farmed foods from my bf's mom's farm.

It is surprisingly nice outside this week. It actually feels like spring might be coming after the most snow we've seen here in years. Apparently the Canada geese agree, I've been seeing and hearing them fly over already. Hopefully nature knows something we don't and spring is coming! The nice weather is the perfect excuse to put away some of my boots and bring out the peep toes. This utterly retro lace top is another hand-me-down. Not a flattering shape, but the lace and high collar so so fun! Also, Neiman Marcus has declared relaxed pants a spring trend. I have to agree with them because at the moment my favs are my harem pants, some loose draw string pants from last post, and some wide casual cargo-ish pants. They are so comfy and soft, it's the perfect transition for me, since I've been so stuck on super soft leggings all winter, I'd hate to be wearing stiff trousers or rigid jeans now.

I LOVE THIS BLAZER! This giant plaid blazer has the best giant shoulder pads. Man, vintage stuff is fun to wear. It was given to me, as was the lace top under my sweater. I have taken on the reputation of wearing old weird vintage items. It's true, I love out-dated 80s stuff to mix into my wardrobe and I would much rather wear clothes from my friends (or their moms) than from a stranger at a thrift store :)

I bought this coat from the womens section of my thrift store a while back. It was missing some buttons but with some careful button rearranging of the ones that were left, it looks fine now. I love the tons of pockets and epaulettes and herringbone weave on it. It also has a drawstring at the waist to create a more cinched look. I didn't really think about the name tag but I looked at it again and realized it's by Shades of Greige. Funny because it's a trendy menswear company (maybe that's why I was attracted to it!). I love menswear stuff for its utilitarian look. Maybe that's why my new glasses are also technically Prada men's too. They are bigger and boxier than all the womens I found. My boyfriend was also wearing a great thrifted herringbone jacket...which I might have to borrow.

We decided to use up my NM perk cards and eat at NM cafe. I was surprised by the long wait but very impressed with the food. I had the hummus plate as a starter which is a misnomer because it included pita and hummus, tsatziki sauce, and salad with olives and feta enough for a meal on it's own. The fresh made rolls and strawberry butter were awesome and my meal of chicken quesadilla minus the chicken (I'm a vegetarian) was great. If you will be in Tyson's NM anytime soon I recommend stopping for a drink and hummus plate for a great shopping snack!

I got a bunch of hand-me-downs from my best friends mom. THANKYOU! I love anything unique and vintage-y so this tiny red and white checked shirt were right up my alley. It might look a little like a picnic table cloth but I love it.

I bought this coat from Banana Republic a year or two ago, and it's still one of my favorites, Luckily the military trend is still going strong, although I'd probably be wearing it regardless. Also you can't really see, but I'm wearing my new favorite nail polish: Chanel Particuliere. It's the one on all the models in the Spring/Summer 2010 show. It is the most perfect shade of taupe, kind of a dark mushroom shade.

We are awaiting more snow. No joke. It's going to be months before all this stuff finally melts away. Being off of work has been a great chance to work from home, do loads and loads of laundry, bake cookies and brownies and actually be productive. The aftermath of the blizzard! My bf and I took almost 2 hours getting our cars uncovered. You can see my car before and after. Also of course the bf being a goofball and shoving his face in the snow and I found a lovely snow bed to lay on. To top it all off (all 30 inches of snow) we are getting another 5-10 tomorrow night.

Today's list: snow gear! 2 pairs of pants! top ones are marahashi cotton pants which are nicely wind proof, prada shades (come on even in the snow I'm a fashionista at heart)

I have to admit as sick as I am of winter, this morning was actually beautiful with the freshly fallen snow still covering all the trees. I wish I had thought to pull out my camera, by the time lunch time rolled around it had all melted off. No worries though, this weekend we're going to get another foot or so, leaving plenty more photo opportunities. I just grabbed comfy clothes that I knew would be warm today. Only problem is the buttons are slowly falling off this coat, I wear it so much. Oh well...

I wasn't sure when I started this blog whether I had the dedication or time to keep it up and now I'm up to my 100th post! Crazy! It was beyond bitterly cold today and I wish I had layered more. My giant batwing sweater is warm but way too open. Next time I'll put a lace top underneath or something warmer. All I had was a tank top and that was a huge mistake lol. This cold weather is bringing us snow tomorrow which is fine by me-if it must be below freezing it might as well be pretty and white outside too. Hope wherever you are, you are staying warm and cozy!

I was too busy to really spend any time on these today, and the wind was blowing my hair everywhere, so I apologize for the lack of photos. I'm exhausted now, but really looking forward to Modern Family. Do you guys watch it? It's so funny, smart, and sweet. I highly recommend giving it a chance if you haven't already.

It was raining cats and dogs this morning. I love that saying. Here's me taking the pups to the vet. They hate it, Bentley cried the entire way there even though Porsche was the one with the appt. Not that either of them would understand this fact. In the second photo Bentley looks like he has no front legs, not to worry, he's just about to jump on me.

Here's the fleece skirt I found in my closet and one of the comfiest outfits ever! I just remembered a long velour skirt I'll be wearing soon I'm sure too. Funny how even in my 25 years of life, trends from high school have already come back. What I really wish is that my mom had saved more from the 70s and 80s. I know I'll be keeping a lot more of my wardrobe for my future self and possible daughters :)

New Year's Resolutions

I'm ready to finally put my resolutions in writing:

1. Stop shopping, I have a full closet and I know I can be more creative with all that I have without buying more (plus I need to save up to travel)

2. Draw more, my degree is in illustration and design but the former has fallen to the wayside. I must keep it up.

On that note: here's a quick sketch from my lunch break. I envisioned a superhero, leathery corset with a pair of baggy wide soft pants for contrast and a tiny pouch bag.

Two elderly ladies passed by me and my friend as we were taking pictures today, when one said "darling outfit". Totally made my day. Oh and these boots are my answer to uggs. I don't like them and I never will. I think there's a reason Ugg rhymes with fug. So these London Fog boots are the perfect compromise of furry warm insulation on the inside and actually cute (and waterproof) on the outside. Buy them on piperlime.com. The leggings streak continues with another pair of marc by marc jacobs leggings. They are particularly thick and stretchy compared to other brands, not as soft as dvf but definitely warmer.

Hope you had a wonderful, safe thanksgiving! This year was the first year I hosted thanksgiving for my family, and even though I am not a cook by any means, everything turned out great. The hardest part was trying to get everything to be warm at the same time. I was afraid to leave stuff in the oven and over cook it, and when most things were ready I had to pop others in the microwave, then first things got cold! Any hints for next time other than getting a double oven or a caterer would be appreciated :)
